Those three-wheeled taxis (or samlor) are best known as tuk-tuks, named for the steady whir of their engines. They are popular amongst tourists and can be fun for short trips around town. A 10 minute ride should cost around 40 baht, but always bargain before boarding: if a tuk – tuk driver offers to deliver you anywhere in town for as low as 10 baht, it’s part of a setup that will lead you to an overpriced souvenir or jewellery shop. It would be wise to decline any such offers.

หมู่เกาะสิมิลันเป็นจุดหมายปลายทางหลัก  ๆในประเทศไทยที่นักดำน้ำมักจะแวะเวียนมาเที่ยว และหมู่เกาะนี้ยังเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจังหวัดพังงา หมู่เกาะสิมิลันมีอยู่ด้วยกัน 9 เกาะ (สิมิลันในภาษามาเลย์แปลว่า 9) เกาะบอน เกาะบางู เกาะสิมิลัน เกาะปายู เกาะเมียง (2 เกาะต่อกัน) เกาะปาหยัน เกาะปายัง และเกาะหูยง หมู่เกาะเหล่านี้มีชื่อเรื่องแนวปะการัง ปะการังและความหลากหลายของชีวิตสัตว์ใต้ทะเล นักท่องเที่ยวต่างชื่นชอบกับการได้ชม ปลาบาราคิวดา ปลาเทรวาลียักษ์ (ลักษณะคล้ายปลาสำลี) ปลากระเบนยักษ์ ฉลามเสือดาว และปลาเหลืองโพรง กล้วยเกาะ กล้วยจรวด

I have to admit that even I am Thai living in Thailand but I have never visited the south of Thailand which I heard so much about. Most of my students mentioned that several islands down there were fastinating. Now I would like to share some info with you and hope that one day you will be able to explore those spectacular islands.

Phang nga is situated on the west side of the Malay Peninsula in Southern Thailand, and includes the many islands of the Phang Nga Bay set in the Andaman Sea. The most famous one is ‘James Bond Island’, a needle formed limestone rock in the sea, so called as it featured in the 1974 cult movie The Man with the Golden Gun.

(Phang-Nga Bay) National Park was established in 1981 to protect the many fascinating islands and abundant wild life, marine and land.

The Similan Islands are one of Thailand’s main diving destinations, are also part of Phang Nga province. The Similans consist of 9 islands (Similan means 9 in Malay language) Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two adjoining islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. The islands are famed for their reefs, coral and variety of marine life. Tourists like to spot chevron barracuda, giant trevally, manta rays, leopard sharks and rainbow runners.

Just small happiness…a Thai Exercise to help you learn Thai

Today I would like to change the topic, let’s talk about entertainment. Normally I don’t go to the clubs or pubs because I am allegic to cigarette smoke and I don’t drink alcohol. So I think it is too expensive for just getting iced coffee there. Then my favourite places would be Japanese restaurants, Steak Houses, Coffee Shops or movies theatres. You can see that I like having nice meals and watching movies. To be honest with you, I haven’t seen any movies lately, just some American series at home. Please do not ask me how Thai soap operas are because I never know. If I am at home, I see only news, especially foreign news. I do like listening to music. Several years ago I liked going out for music. If I said I liked Rock music, you might not buy that but it was true. All these years I still have music in my heart. So all this is the way I entertain myself. No harm done, right?

วันนี้ขอเปลี่ยนประเด็นหน่อยนะ มาคุยกันเรื่องบันเทิงบ้างดีกว่า โดยปกติแล้วดิฉันไม่ไปเที่ยวคลับ เที่ยวบาร์ เพราะว่าเป็นคนแพ้ควันบุหรี่แล้วก็ไม่ดื่มเหล้า ก็เลยคิดว่ามันคงจะไม่จำเป็นที่จะต้องหากาแฟเย็นกินในผับ ในบาร์ มันแพงไปน่ะ ทีนี้ที่โปรดที่ชอบไปก็เลยเป็นพวกร้านอาหารญี่ปุ่นบ้าง ร้านสเต็กบ้าง ร้านกาแฟ ไม่ก็โรงหนัง คุณ ๆ คงเห็นแล้วว่าดิฉันชอบกินอาหารอร่อย ๆ แล้วก็ชอบดูหนังด้วย พุดตรง ๆ นะช่วงนี้ไม่ได้ดูหนังเลย ก็ดูแค่ซีรีส์อเมริกันที่บ้านบ้าง อย่าถามนะว่าละครไทยเป็นยังไงเพราะว่าไม่รู้จริง ๆ ก็ถ้าอยู่บ้าน ก็ดูแต่ข่าวโดยฉพาะข่าวต่างประเทศ เป็นคนชอบฟังเพลงนะ หลายปีก่อนชอบออกไปฟังเพลงตอนดึก ๆ แล้วถ้าบอกว่าเป็นคนชอบเพลงร็อคคุณ ๆ ก็อาจจะไม่เชื่อ แต่เรื่องจริงนะ ตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมาดิฉันก็ยังมีเพลงอยู่ในหัวใจ แล้วทั้งหมดนี้ก็เป็นวิธีให้ความสุขตัวเองแบบของดิฉัน ไม่เป็นพิษเป็นภัย ว่ามั๊ย

One Night on the Cruise… an Exercise to learn Thai

Let’s go to the cinema – bpai doo năng gan tòerh!

To say “go to the cinema” in Thai is “bpai doo năng” The word ‘năng’ is a colloquial word which means “movie” and the word ‘cinema’ in Thai is ‘rong-năng’.  The most recognized cinemas in Thailand are SF Cinema, Major Cineplex and EGV.  One good thing when you buy the ticket or ‘dtuă-năng’ in Thai is that you can select the seat and you can also call to book the ticket and pick it up about 30 minutes – 1 hour before the movie starts.

In Thailand there is not only Thai movie but also international movies too…mostly from Hollywood, Korea and Hong Kong.

Let’s take a look at the words relating to the movie!

1. Type of movies

• Thai movie         = năng-Thai                     หนังไทย
• Western movie   = năng fá-ràng                 หนังฝรั่ง    
• Chinese movie    = năng jeen                       หนังจีน 
• Korean movie     = năng gao-leě                 หนังเกาหลี 
• Japanese movie  = năng yeê-pùn           หนังญี่ปุ่น

2. Genre of movies

Now I guess you can talk with your Thai friends about the movie that you’ve seen and also to ask your friends out to the cinema.

Oh one more thing, please don’t forget to pay respect to His Majesty the King by standing up when the Royal Anthem (Pleng Săn-soěrn-prá-baa-rá-mee  เพลงสรรเสริญพระบารมี ) plays before the movie.
