Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

By Jang

The Most Popular Floating Market
The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located in Damnoen Saduak District, Ratchaburi Province. It is about 105 kms far from Bangkok. According to history, in 1866, King Rama IV would like to have a 32 kms long canal to be dug at Damnoen Saduak. This canal would connect the Mae Klong River with the Ta-jeen River.
The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a very attractive place for tourists to see the old style and traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables, etc., from small boats. Tourists will also see traditional Thai houses, the way they live and travel by boats, and please try riding on a small boat to experience the floating market and to
see more. This is a worthwhile trip.

The excellent quality soil beside the canal is very fertile and suitable for growing many kinds of fruits and vegetables. The area is famous for Malacca grape, Chinese grapefruit, mangoes, bananas, and coconut.

How To Get There :
Travel from Bangkok via Thonburi-Paktoh Highway to Samut Songkhram Town. Follow the sign to Damnoen Saduak (Highway No.325).

Tuk-Tuk (ตุ๊ก ตุ๊ก)

By prae

Those three-wheeled taxis (or samlor) are best known as tuk-tuks, named for the steady whir of their engines. They are popular amongst tourists and can be fun for short trips around town. A 10 minute ride should cost around 40 baht, but always bargain before boarding: if a tuk – tuk driver offers to deliver you anywhere in town for as low as 10 baht, it’s part of a setup that will lead you to an overpriced souvenir or jewellery shop. It would be wise to decline any such offers.

Water Monitor

By nut

Water monitors / dtua ngern  dtua to:ng (name given by the King)  /

                               dtua hȋa (old name)                         ตัวเหี้ย

The Water Monitor is an animal which has had a strange past. This animal is not liked by most Thai’s (hence the old name ….translates as fffing animal!). It lives in dirty water and it is thought to bring with it disease and bad luck; also more importantly it eats your chickens and other farm animals so over all it is less than popular.

The King took pity on this unfortunate animal whose name was so rude that you could call it by it’s name in polite conversation. You would refer to it as …’that animal’ or sàt ná:n /สัตว์นั้ this would lead to a number of confusing conversations. The King renamed the Water Monitor carefully selecting a name that would be good luck and revered by Thai people: Hence the name Dtua Ngern Dtua To:ng which translates as Money body and Gold body …both items well respected by Thai. In fact although this means you can talk to about the Water Monitor without the risk of causing offence Thai still do not love this animal.

Dtua Ngern Dtua Hia is a substantial lizard weighing in at about 10-25kg and growing up to 3 meters although most are about 1.5 meters and about 10-15kgs. These lizards swim also and climb trees. If you visit Bangkok you can see them in the parks. Note how the Thais tend to stay away from them. If you’ve never been to Lumphini park, the Dusit zoo you are likely to see these lizards. And do not be fooled, these lizards can run fast, faster than most people!

Thai festival : Songkran Day

By Jang

Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival and spend their time with family. The family members to gather in order to express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them gifts including making merits to dedicate the result to their ancestors. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity.

Songkran is a Thai word which means “move” or “change place” as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the “Water Festival” as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.

Thais value the religion by means of merits acquisition, offerings
alms to monks, Dhamma Practice, listening to sermon and monks-bathing.

In the afternoon, after bathing Buddha images, both young and old, joyfully splash water on each other. The most-talked about celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival, to watch the Miss Songkran Contest and the beautiful parades.

Also in Bangkok, the famous area for Songkran is Kao San Road where both Thais and farangs are enjoying splashing water.

Should you would like to experience the enjoyable festival, you are always welcomed to Thailand ^_^.

The Man with the Golden Gun

I have to admit that even I am Thai living in Thailand but I have never visited the south of Thailand which I heard so much about. Most of my students mentioned that several islands down there were fastinating. Now I would like to share some info with you and hope that one day you will be able to explore those spectacular islands.

Phang nga is situated on the west side of the Malay Peninsula in Southern Thailand, and includes the many islands of the Phang Nga Bay set in the Andaman Sea. The most famous one is ‘James Bond Island’, a needle formed limestone rock in the sea, so called as it featured in the 1974 cult movie The Man with the Golden Gun.

(Phang-Nga Bay) National Park was established in 1981 to protect the many fascinating islands and abundant wild life, marine and land.

The Similan Islands are one of Thailand’s main diving destinations, are also part of Phang Nga province. The Similans consist of 9 islands (Similan means 9 in Malay language) Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two adjoining islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. The islands are famed for their reefs, coral and variety of marine life. Tourists like to spot chevron barracuda, giant trevally, manta rays, leopard sharks and rainbow runners.

I hope this will help you learn Thai and learn about Phang Nga!

Till next time…
