Thai Flag Description:
The flag of Thailand consists of five horizontal stripes. The top and bottom are equal-sized red stripes, the middle stripe is blue which is lined above and below by equal-sized white stripes. The blue stripe is double the size of the other four.
Thai Flag Meaning:
The red stripes represent the blood spilt to maintain Thailand’s independence. The white stands for purity and is the color of Buddhism which is the country’s main religion. Blue is Thailand’s national color and it represents the Thai monarchy. The blue is also used to honor Thailand’s World War I allies, Great Britain, France, United States and Russia, who all had red, white and blue flags.
Thai Flag History:
The current Thai flag was adopted on September 28, 1917, making it one of the world’s older flags. From the mid-19th century until 1916, Thailand, which was called Siam until 1939, used a red based flag with a white elephant on it. That flag was replaced in 1916 with a red-white-red-white-red horizontal striped flag which was modified in 1917, when the blue center replaced red.
Interesting Thai Flag Facts:
The Thai flag is called Triaranga or Triarong, which literally means ‘tricolor‘.
Even when Thai changed its name from Siam in 1939 and when it was allied with Japan during World War 2 the flag remained the same.

One of the most beautiful festivals that takes place in Thailand is the one for Loy Krathong. This is celebrated on the full moon in November. The word loy means to float, and a krathong is a banana leaf cup. People place a candle and incense sticks in their krathongs and then float them on a local river or pond. As they push away their krathong, they ask for forgiveness in polluting the waterways and also for good luck in the coming months.

Thai language has 32 vowels which are generally categorized into three groups as follows:
This is step 2 of learning Thai, the second thing that you have to learn apart from the Thai consonants or Thai alphabet is Thai vowels.
Short vowels consist of –ะ –ิ –ึ –ุ เ–ะ แ–ะ โ–ะ เ–าะ –ัวะ เ–ียะ
เ–ือะ เ–อะ
Long vowels consist of –า –ี –ือ –ู เ– แ– โ– –อ –ัว
เ–ีย เ–ือ เ–อ
Irregular vowels consist of –ำ ใ– ไ– เ–า ฤ ฤๅ (ฦ ฦๅ *no longer used)
As for the Irregular vowels, most of them are transferred to ‘Long vowels’ group except ฤ . And the reason we call them ‘Irregular vowels’ is that they have the sounds of consonants blended in themselves as follows:
–ำ = –ะ with ม (m-sound)
ไ– = –ะ with ย (y-sound)
ใ– = –ะ with ย (y-sound)
เ–า = –ะ with ว (w-sound)
ฤๅ= รือ (ร with –ือ)
ฤ = รึ (ร with –ึ )
The main reason we have to categorize Thai vowels into 2 groups based on sounds; short sound and long sound, is that the vowels also play a major role in tones, pronunciation and grammar. And the two groups of vowels will generate the Thai syllables or Thai words to Dead Syllables and Live Syllables. We spend a longtime practising this with our students at our Thai Language School – but don’t be put off this comes over time …even Thai nationals can get this wrong!
What are the Dead syllables and Live Syllables? To be continued…
