Psychological Test : What did you see in this picture?

By Jang

Please be honest :)

What did you see in the picture?

A) the couples are enjoying themselves            B) 9 dolphins

Believe it or not!?
If you see 9 dolphins in the picture indicate that your mind is still innocent and think nothing with sexuality.
Also the little children, most of them saw the dolphins because their mind is still innocent.

As for me, I saw only dophins. Do you believe me?? hehehehehehe..

Vocabularies

dolphin           =  bplaa-loh-maa    ปลาโลมา
Psychology   =  jìt-dtà-wít-tá-yaa    จิตวิทยา
innocent         =   rái-diang-s
ǎa    ไร้เดียงสา

One of the most beautiful festivals that takes place in Thailand is the one for Loy Krathong. This is celebrated on the full moon in November. The word loy means to float, and a krathong is a banana leaf cup. People place a candle and incense sticks in their krathongs and then float them on a local river or pond. Peace is needed in our society

By Jang

Morality is an important thing to make human a human.
Today I would like to share something that I read. They are moral words in Buddhism and Hindu.

Peace
“Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.”
By:Buddhism: Buddha Dhamma Sangha (พุทธศาสนา: พระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงฆ์)

“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.”
By : the Buddha

Peace ความสงบ
“Both of win and lose are not a peace ทั้งชนะทั้งแพ้ ล้วนแต่มิใช่ความสงบ”
By : พุทธทาส

Anger
“You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.”
By:Buddhism: Buddha Dhamma Sangha (พุทธศาสนา: พระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงฆ์)

Give / การให้
Happiness depends on what you can give not what you can get ความสุขอยู่ที่การให้ มิใช่อยู่ที่การรับ

Nonviolence (อหิงสา)
Nonviolence is impossible without humility. อหิงสาจะเกิดขึ้นไม่ได้ หากปราศจากความอ่อนน้อมถ่อมตน
By : Mahatma Gandhi

Weapon (อาวุธ)
“Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong” อหิงสาคืออาวุธของผู้ที่เข้มแข็ง
By : Mahatma Gandhi

Hope these are interesting and can give you a calm.
If everyone has a morality in their heart, they will bring the peace back to the society.

May the peace be with you :)

Announcement – Thai Language Hut will be shut over Songran!

By mark

Thai Language Hut will be shut from Monday 12th April to Thursday 15th April for the Thai National Holiday of Songran.

Our teachers will be returning to their families and will celebrate the Buddhist Thai New Year with ceremonial cleaning of Buddhist icons and a lot of playing with water fights. Every town and village will have children and teens waiting by the side of the road to drench travellers as they pass an extension of the cleansing ceremony. There will also be a lot of talcum power and soap being thrown around which is also a part of the washing tradition which is now a game. It is a time of renewal and change. Washing away the old and welcoming in the new.

I wish you all a Happy Thai New Year or Sawadii Pii Mai!

Can you can a can as a canner can can a can?

By pook

A tongue twister is a phrase, sentence or rhyme that presents difficulties when spoken because it contains similar sounds. To get the full effect of a tongue twister you should try to repeat it several times, as quickly as possible, without stumbling or mispronouncing.

For example,

A fly and flea flew into a flue,
said the fly to the flea ‘what shall we do?’
‘let us fly’ said the flea
said the fly ’shall we flee’
so they flew through a flaw in the flue.

The above one is in English, now Let’s try some Thai funny  tongue twisters

You’ll see that they also can tangle up your whole mouth!

สาว แสนสวย ใส่ เสื้อ สีแสด สวม ส้นสูง สีส้ม
Sǎ:w  sǎe:n-sǔay sài  suâ  siˇ:  sàe:t  sǔam  sôn  sǔ:ng  siˇ: sôm
“A gorgeous girl wears an orange T-shirt and orange high heels.”

กล้วยตานี ปลาย หวี เหี่ยว หิ้ว หวี ไป หิ้ว หวี มา
glûay  dta-ni: bpla:y  wiˇ:  hìaw  hîw  wiˇ: bpai  hîw  wiˇ: ma:
“The Tanee bananas with black wilted tips were carried to and fro.”

ชามเขียว คว่ำ เช้า ชามขาว คว่ำ ค่ำ

Cha:m   kǐaw kwâm cháo  cha:m  kǎ:w  kwâm  kâm
“The green bowl is turned upside down in the morning; The white bowl is turned upside down at night.”

How was it ?!?!?!?

Thai festival : Songkran Day

By Jang

Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival and spend their time with family. The family members to gather in order to express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them gifts including making merits to dedicate the result to their ancestors. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity.

Songkran is a Thai word which means “move” or “change place” as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the “Water Festival” as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.

Thais value the religion by means of merits acquisition, offerings
alms to monks, Dhamma Practice, listening to sermon and monks-bathing.

In the afternoon, after bathing Buddha images, both young and old, joyfully splash water on each other. The most-talked about celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival, to watch the Miss Songkran Contest and the beautiful parades.

Also in Bangkok, the famous area for Songkran is Kao San Road where both Thais and farangs are enjoying splashing water.

Should you would like to experience the enjoyable festival, you are always welcomed to Thailand ^_^.

How to say “No” in Thai.

By Jang

Thailand is not really that bad with street hawkers, tuk tuk drivers or people trying to sell you something. International sign language of shaking your head and walking on usually works. But try some of these phrases, you might surprise them. They then might stop bothering you.

ไม่เอาครับ         mài ao khrab*            I don’t want any

ไม่มีตังค์            mài mi: dtang            I don’t have any money

ลืมเอาตังค์มา     lum ao dtang ma:       I forgot my money

*for women you must say  not kráp.

When you are walking down a street you might hear someone ask you “bai nai?” This means “Where are you going?” Usually it will be a tuk tuk driver but sometimes just an ordinary person. Some visitors get annoyed because they hear it so often. But really, “bai nai” is like a greeting and the person isn’t really interested in your answer.

A:     ไปไหน      bai nǎi?

Where are you going?

B:     ไปเที่ยว     bai tîaw

        going out for pleasure

That might be enough for most people. But, if a tuk tuk driver is insistant try:

จะเดินไป   ja der:n bai                I want to walk

A common complaint we get are about tuk tuk drivers or other people telling tourists that a temple or museum is closed for the day. They then take the tourists to another place and then eventually a gem shop. This is a scam. Try some of these replies:

ไม่เชื่อ               mài chûa           I don’t believe you

ไม่จริง               mài jing             Not true

จะไปดูเอง          ja bai du: e:ng   I want to go and see for myself

เคยไปมาแล้ว     ker:y bai ma: láe:w     I have been there already

ไม่อยากไป         mài yàk bai                I don’t want to go

Hope you enjoyed learning Thai…

Thai Expression “mâi bpen rai”

By Jang

“mâi bpen rai” is an idiomatic expression meaning never mind, don’t worry about it, it doesn’t matter. We can use mâi bpen rai” to response to “Thank you”, when it means you’re welcome and to response to “Sorry”, when it means it doesn’t matter.

For example,

Thank you  :  kòrp-kun kâ / kráp          response  :  mâi bpen rai kâ / kráp

Sorry  :  kǒr-tôht kâ / kráp                   response  :  mâi bpen rai kâ / kráp

Moreover, mâi bpen rai” is able to use if you want to say “no, thank you” indirectly when somebody offers you something and you do not want it. Sometimes, Thais are worried that they could hurt the others feeling if they said “no” directly so they avoid by saying “mâi bpen rai”

For example,

A : kun ao gaa-fae mái?             Do you want coffee?

B : mâi bpen rai kâ (kòrp-kun kâ).       No, thank you.

Huh? You would like to give me some snacks? Mâi bpen rai kâ! ^_^

Hope you enjoyed learning Thai!
